Performance, Build and Sound Quality
It takes at least 6 weeks
for a valve amp to become properly 'run in' but this one started very
well - it ran for nearly 11 hours straight from the box without any
problems whatsoever and sounded excellent from the off. After a second
stint of about 10 hours continuous playing, it started to open up nicely
with a big and beautifully clear sound and no hum whatsoever.
One problem occurred after
about 3 days of normal use - the volume control started to play up
causing intermittent loss of the left channel and maximum volume only on
the right channel which damaged a (luckily) a relatively inexpensive
speaker driver. The eBay Seller was contacted and he promised to put an
Alps replacement in the post straightaway - it never arrived....
The build quality is
generally very good - it is heavy and substantial, fit and finish is
good with no damaged screwheads on show and the few controls it does
have feel fine. Inside, the components look good and are well laid out
and firmly fixed with decent soldering throughout. As I hoped, the
transformers are quite massive and appear to be well made - all in all,
the solid, unfussy 'workmanlike' amplifier I suspected and hoped it
might be.
There is some very light
scuffing here and there on the stainless steel due to obvious careless
handling during manufacture and the cheap varnish is flaking in one very
small place near the front panel - not the peak of absolute perfection
possibly, but I think altogether quite acceptable at this price level. -
It would be quite easy to pay 10 times the price of this amp for a 'high-end'
equivalent from certain 'Famous Names', but I very much doubt you will
get ten times better sound - it is without doubt the most impressive
amplifier I have heard on my setup. The sound is enormous and strong
with a superb clarity and all the qualities you could ask of a 300B SET.
Conclusion
For me, this amplifier is a
bargain - it gets you into the very special world of 300B Single Ended
Triodes for a tiny fraction of the normal entry price and, on the right
speakers (in my case the
Buschhorns I made a while back) the sound is simply quite stunning!
But here have been one or two problems - the above mentioned volume pot
and a rectifier valve which I think will need replacing.
I am hoping it will prove
to be as robust and reliable as my
Dynavox
amps once it has settled down and there is a 3 month warranty with the
amp, but the practicality of such a warranty needs to be considered -
coming direct from China rules out simply 'taking it back to the shop'
if any any serious problems occur!! Once the amp has been delivered I
reckon you are on your own and would therefore not recommend it to a
complete beginner or to someone who doesn't have the necessary tools and
experience to maintain and repair it if something goes wrong.
There are other caveats
when importing items from the Far East - dealings with some (not all)
Far Eastern eBay Sellers can be less than satisfactory. Expect
communications to be scant and language difficulties can make
communications hard work. Heavy items sent SAL (Sea And Land), are
going to take a good while to arrive. The "2-3 weeks to the UK" quoted
on the eBay auction was totally unrealistic - it took nearer 6, so take
such promises with a big pinch of salt and bear in mind that 'Tracking
Numbers' aren't much use until the consignment actually arrives in the
UK. Also consider that the consignment could be held by Customs & Excise
for anything up to a month anyway, when you will be charged duty on top
of the purchase price!!
